John Coates

John was born in Southport, Lancashire. He trained at Guildford School of Acting. Upon graduation, he toured the UK company of Doctor Dolitte, covering the role of General Bellows.

John has just finished The Pirates of Penzance at the Open-Air theatre in Kilworth, prior to which he toured in the number one UK tour of Beauty and the Beast, as the bookseller, covering roles of Maurice, Monsieur D’Arque and Cogsworth. He went direct to Beauty and the Beast from the West End cast of Jerry Springer – the Opera, at the Cambridge Theatre where he played Dustin Summers. Prior to Jerry Springer – the Opera, he played Bisset the Butcher and understudied Mr Fezzwig in the UK sell out national tour of Scrooge, starring Tommy Steele. He went direct to Scrooge after his role of Rattlesnake, from the West End company of Calamity Jane, at the Shaftesbury Theatre following an extensive national tour, covering the role of Henry Miller. John has also appeared in a tribute to Stephen Sondheim – Sondheim Tonight at the Barbican Theatre.

Other musical roles include God in Children of Eden, Benny Van Buren in Damm Yankees, Mr Appopolous in Wonderful Town, Colonel Dr Otternshlag in Grand Hotel. His favourite theatre roles include Professor Van Hesling in Dracula, Bertram in All’s Well That Ends Well, Ben in The Dumb Waiter, Laurence Moss in Abigail’s Party and Lucky Eric in Bouncers.

Pantomime credits include the Genie in Aladdin at the Northcott Theatre, Exeter.

John is a recent member of the Manchester Circle of Magicians. He has appeared in a number of variety shows with Wigan Pier and for Mark Brewers Associates – for Potters Leisure, The Chichester All Star Gala. His recordings include Sondheim Tonight taped live at the Barbican and Jerry Springer – the Opera for BBC 2.
