From Two Pence to Two Million!
Twopence to Cross the Mersey, the smash hit sell-out musical celebrated reaching Two Million pounds
at the box office when it returned to the Liverpool Empire on 6th October 2009.
The show’s writers and producers, Rob and Alan Fennah, couldn’t have predicted the popularity of this
much-loved musical when they first introduced it to audiences back in 2004. Now, after a further three
visits to the Empire due to popular demand, the show has become a multi-million pound selling
production.
Rob Fennah said:
“Considering the show has only been staged for eight weeks in total, hitting two
million at the box office in such a short space of time is a real achievement.”
Alan Fennah added:
“Helen Forrester has sold over 4 million books in the UK and Ireland alone and
our aim now is to tour the show and give Helen’s vast readership a chance to see her most famous book
come to life.”
Based on the bestselling book by Helen Forrester, Twopence to Cross the Mersey tells the true story of
how Helen and her formerly wealthy family had to leave behind the nannies and the servants and survive
with the streetwise working class during the depression of the 1930’s. ‘Twopence’ is the first of four best
selling volumes of autobiography.
Hannah Ashdown, General Manager of the Empire Theatre, said: "Twopence to Cross the Mersey is one
of the most successful shows to appear at this theatre in recent years. People are even travelling from as
far as Japan and Australia to come and see it; we are delighted to have supported this great production
from the start."
“The feeling of the show is very accurate and the writers have put real understanding of life into the
songs.” Helen Forrester.
